Covid-19 in Practice

COVID-19, the disease caused by the Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, changed the world in a way that few of us could have imagined just a couple months ago. Did we think at the start of the year that it would travel over from China and wreak the havoc that it has done over here? We as dental care professionals are currently experiencing mass confusion with particular respect to the date on which we could return to work, what procedures we are allowed to carry out and what our Standard Operating Procedures should be. Further, there are apparent shortages of the appropriate PPE and alleged profiteering from within the profession in trying to obtain said PPE.

All of the above will lead to increased stress levels in us all as individuals. This is in addition to the usual, everyday stresses in carrying out our duties in pre-Covid 19 days. These increased stress levels can very easily lead to human performance being affected in a negative way. The impact of this is the increased risk of adverse outcomes and decreased levels of patient safety. Human Factors training has never been appropriate or necessary than at present. Our Team at Black Box Dentistry have developed courses specifically designed to help Dental Care Professionals deal with recognising and managing increased stress levels with the specific aim of reducing errors and increasing patient safety.
